Standardization tasks in the marine fleet system

As a result of the neglect of standardization issues, the interests of maritime transport were not taken into account by the domestic industry. The equipment and mechanisms produced by the domestic industry (with the exception of shipbuilding) are mostly designed for stationary installations and have increased size and weight, are not adapted to seawater, do not always match the characteristics of marine electric motors, and have connection dimensions corresponding to stationary standards rather than shipbuilding standards. As a result of all this, out of 81 standard-sized pumps produced by Minmashpribor plants, only 12 can be fully used. Of the 4 standard sizes of refrigeration units, only one can be used. None of the 22 standard sizes of air compressors can be used without some kind of alterations.

Of the fittings, the production of which is planned by the Ministry of Mechanical Engineering and Instrumentation, 96 standard sizes correspond to the grid nomenclature, according to which there are 834 standard sizes in the same range. Fittings manufactured and planned by the Ministry of Mechanical Engineering and Instrumentation also have increased dimensions and weight, and connection dimensions that differ significantly from the connection dimensions adopted for pipelines in marine shipbuilding. These fittings do not include steel fittings, as well as fittings designed for seawater; some types have characteristics that do not meet the requirements of the Maritime Register. Some of the fittings may be approved for use on ships of the navy, but only as a temporary measure, pending the organization of production of standard special marine fittings.

Of the fittings manufactured by the Ministry of Shipbuilding Industry, 45 standard sizes fully correspond to the grid.

In view of all these circumstances, the Ministry of the Navy faces a major task in organizing standardization and normalization in its system, in particular, standardization of ship equipment, mechanisms and supplies necessary for further technical armament and re-equipment of maritime transport.

The beginning of this work on the fleet was laid by the grid of standard sizes of ship mechanisms, equipment and supplies developed by the Marine Project.

Without waiting for the final organizational formalization, it is necessary, based on requests from the main departments, to draw up and approve a plan for standardization and normalization throughout the Ministry for 1948-1950, with a more detailed allocation of 1948, indicating the performers and deadlines for the implementation of standards and norms.

First of all, the development of documents should be included in the plan.: 1) establishing relationships with customers and suppliers, 2) establishing design and design standards common to all major departments of the Ministry — the Navy, ports, Glavmorput, industrial enterprises, construction organizations, Glavmortechenab, 3) defining the characteristics of standard products to be developed by enterprises of the Ministry of the Navy, and standard technological processes of enterprises.
